Jill Scott, the daughter of Joyce Scott in Philadelphia Pennsylvania was born on April 4 in 1972. The family was dominated by her grandmother, as a single child. Scott was a student at the Philadelphia High School for Girls. After graduating in the year 2000, she enrolled at Temple University. Scott studied secondary school education as well as working two different job. She planned on becoming an instructor of English in a secondary school. After three years of being teacher's assistant and studying her goal to become a high school English teacher came to a halt. Her career began with a performance artist who spoke words and performing during poetry readings. She then teamed up with Amir Quest Love Thompson from The Roots. They wrote You Got Me together. She was first outed as a performer at the Roots Show. After that, she began collaboration with other musicians such as Eric Benet Will Smith or Common. She was also able to gain experience on stage as she performed in the Canada tour of the Broadway show Rent. She was signed to Hidden Beach Recordings as their first signing artist.
